How it Started

Bikes N’ Roses (BNR) was founded in 2011 by a group of youth leaders who were a part of Communities United in Chicago’s Albany Park neighborhood. The idea was to create a space where young people could learn bike repair, earn bikes, and develop valuable life skills while contributing to their community. They developed a name, mission, and even interviewed professional mechanics to become their instructor and shop manager. Initially operating out of a small space, the program quickly grew, offering youth the opportunity to work on bicycles and gain hands-on job experience. Over the years, Bikes N Roses has expanded its reach, becoming a beloved hub for youth empowerment, environmental sustainability, and community engagement.
